Fitness Marketing Mindset Series #1
(The Big Secret to Setting Goals)

http://www.stevehochman.com/video/mindset1.flv

All the fitness marketing tips and secrets in the world simply will not work, if you don’t have the right MINDSET.

Your brain is SO powerful and will “automatically” do so many things to give you what you “want” out of life…

But…

You must give your brain specifics…

It only works on specifics. (that’s when the magic happens)

picture-111

For example, Let’s take (Trainer A) “I want to make more money”

Compared to…

(Trainer B) “I want to make $8333 a month to be on pace for $100k per year.  Currently, I have 20 clients paying an average of $200 per month each, equaling $4k per month.  I will get 22 more clients over the next 16 weeks to give me an additional $4400 per month… Then I will reach my goal of being on pace for $100k per year.

fitness-marketing-moneyWow, what a difference…

Do you think (Trainer B) has a WAY greater probability of hitting his or her goals?

You’re right, without-a-doubt!

Here’s my challenge to you…

Leave a comment with:
1) Where you are now with you business
2) Where you want to be in 2010

Remember to BE SPECIFIC…

When you leave your goals below, I’ll leave a comment back helping you to refine them and drill even deeper.

Hey, it takes guts to show your goals to the whole world, but like they say… NO GUTS, NO GLORY!

  1. Wow Steve, I’m looking forward to these posts – SteveHochman.com rocks!

And yeah, the past never equals the future. My goal for 2010 is to have all 4 FBBC locations at $100k (using HB, 10×10x5, Footsoldiers, Script, etc).

My reason why is to buy my Mom a house in the OC. She used to always say “Money doesn’t grow on trees”, and I want to prove her wrong.

  2. Hey “The Duivis”!

You’ve definatly become one of my closest bro’s and I’m so friggin pumped for you to dominate 2010!

Send me an email with the exact specifics of where you are… and a detailed plan of how your gonna get there!

    I can’t wait man!

  3. Steve – I am officially adopting you as my 2010 mentor (because I know I won’t be disappointed).

    1) Where you are now with you business – Currently deployed in Iraq. I have started my blog to help me begin building credibility in my local market for when I return home in a few months.

    2) Where you want to be in 2010 – I want to be in a position where I can fully support my family with my personal training business, without the primary/additional job income. I want to build a boot camp that has 3 time slots, 3 times a week with 20 clients in each – $141,840 a year!

Just want to say thank you for this site, Steve. My eyes have been opened in the past 3 months with the help of you and Bedros.

  4. Here goes nothing:

I want to make $12,500 a month to be on pace for $150k per year. Currently, I’m recruiting HBs paying $195 per month each equaling $3900 per month. I will get 18 more clients over the next 16 weeks paying regular price (@$494 per month)to give me an additional $8892 per month… Then I’ll reach my goal to be on pace for $150k per year.

I have to get up out of my Mom’s house and help her out financially.

  5. Hey steve I have 1 client that makes me 120/month and a day job that brings in 1200 and month my goals for 2010 are:
create a group training program (no more one-on-ones)
create a stream of income of at least 3000/month with training
    quit the day job
lose the last few pounds I have (lost 50 already, but need about 30 more to go away)
the big one is move my family into a three bedroom house, one with lots of space and fits us all.
    Happy new year steve!

  6. Here is where I am right now.
    My truck has been repossessed
I am in the process of bankruptcy
I lost my house back in Sioux Falls, SD.
I am about $900 behind on rent (down from about $2,000 last month)
I just moved to not only a new city but also a new state
I have sold everything I own and my mom has been sending me money just to get me by, without me asking her to. (same with my wife’s mom)
No kids and no way to pay for them if they do happen

    Good Things
I have a club I am working at
The club is newly acquired and are putting 2mill into renovations (needed)
My wife has a job, as a hair stylist in a high-end salon!
    I love what I do
I love my wife, (Great and understanding person!)
    I have a great dog & 2 cats
I do know some people here in Fort Collins
I have had some clients (but I only get paid 60% of the total price)
I have started a “boot camp” class I have called SBT Camp, (start date 1/2/10)
I have some “human billboards”, which I call the “Force 21”!
I have a great attitude and lots of energy
I know I am going to make this happen, whatever it takes!
I am from the mid-west, all we know is how to work hard!
I worked through school at a local bar/restaurant
(I know how to talk to people I don’t know)

I know this is NOT something you haven’t heard before, but I believe in you, and you have inspired me so much I just thought you might want to hear all this crap before I make my millions and give you some credit in the book I am going to write after I have time to do “what I want when I want!”

Note I am making nothing now!!!(2weeks before the new year)

    Goals
I would think I can do $50,000 this year, but the goal is $75,000
Get 21 into the “Force 21” crew
Work on getting into their “inner circle”
Get to the point where I do not have to be there any more

OPEN UP MY OWN SPOT WITH MY WIFE!!!
    NEVER HAVE TO “WORK” AGAIN!!!

Go skiing a lot and adopt children because I do not think we can have any and my wife and I would really like to have children.

  7. Boot Camp – Just started 2 months ago…
Just expanded to 6 days in AM 5:30 am…
    Adding Wed/Fri at 8:30 am starting 1/15

Have Free Rent, 2 trainers for 2 day.. me the rest.
    Have 6 EFT Club Members

GOAL for BOOT CAMP: Rock the marketing, Have 30 EFT Boot Camp Members and then open a second location.

PERSONAL TRAINING – I operate out of a club (not attached to the club)- pay 25% gross to the club. I do none of the training.. Have 4 part time employees. Just started this last month. Have about 6 clients. Want to max out the trainers… Biggest issue is I am working inside of a club environment where the people seem much more cheaper oriented.. Not used to that…

My goals for the year is to have the Boot Camp at 100,000 and the PT at 100,000 GROSS….

Also do Online Coaching (hitech) and Supplements… but they average about $800-1000 monthly gross.. May expand if I can systemize.. but not worth me doing because of ROI.. unless I can really outsource…

Another big goal is to get better organized and get an assistant…

  8. Steve
I started my bootcamps seven month ago. I averaged 20 people per camp. I would like to bring this to 30 people each in my to classes. this would bring me about 12K a month Have tried Human billboards with little success. I am enthusiastic. I am always asking for referals. I will use Craigslist better than I have and will reach me goal this year

  9. Happy New Year Steve!
What a great way to start 2010.

    Where am I at:
Transitioning my personal training business away from the many services I offer and focusing on 2 things: boot camps and small group training.
Consulting with Lou and David so I get an excellent website.
    Barely breaking even each month.
Offering at home one-on-one personal training that is a huge investment of time and money for me (and not working).

    Where I want to be:
I want to be financially independent from my parents where I can fully support myself with my personal training business.
I want a boot camp that has 3 time slots (early a.m., mid-morning, evening), 3-4 times a week, with 15-20 boot campers per camp.
    Have all clients on EFT.
I want to be renting a facility that does not limit me to time slots and allows me to offer boot camps and small group training plus provides opportunities to join forces with other specialists in the health field.
Living in a condo instead of an apartment.
Driving a BMW (the car I’ve wanted since I was 8).

Steve, I came across your blog back in July. It was just the site I needed to see as your words inspired me to achieve more and get more out of personal training. Thank you so much.

  12. Where I am at:
    I currently have 0 clients.
I am becoming increasingly frustrated with the inability to find clients, bootcamp members, bootcamp sites, anywhere to train, etc
Worried that I won’t be able to get this thing started and not be able to pay the bills

    Where I want to be:
I want to be making more than $2000 per month.
    Start online training and diets
find out how all you guys are making $100k per year! that’s outrageous!

  13. Happy New Year Steve! Goals are my favorite and have always been a very important part of my life. I have been doing bootcamp sessions since Oct 5th. I was working full time and was zapped in energy dept. I had a vision to get my own fitness center/studio. Well, at the end of November the opportunity came and I got the place. I have only 11 clients. However, my doors open Monday, Jan 4th and I am working on getting a virtual bootcamp lifted off and already have 30 clients there!! I have been trickling with curious people and I have a goal to get 60 people by the end of Jan making the $8,000 that seems to be the magic number to make life comfortable and to give back to the community and to my core group who started with me! ;-) I also want to grow in the supplement dept too with prograde. I have been directed to Mark 9:23 many times in these past couple months and I have the faith and the drive to see my dreams come true. My goals will be fullfilled and I thank you for all the help along the way!

  14. You know what!? You’re so right on! I read about this Napolean Hill’s book, Think and Grow Rich. You gotta be specific about what you want and focus on it. Write it down. Read it and repeat to yourself every day. Memorize it. But, be careful what you wish for… I heard about this woman who would always say ” I want a husband”.. She got a husband, except it was some one elses husband. She wasn’t specific enough, she got got a husband though.

I’m starting completely over. My certification expired over a year ago and back when I was training out of a gym as an independent contractor, i was totally clueless about marketing and mindset strategies. I just moved back to a decent sized town ( I was out in the country for a while) and I got a job as a waiter so that I can get back on my feet and save up the money I need to do get the things done in order to get back into the fitness training business.

So basically I’m starting at ZERO.

By May 1st, 2010, I will have two indoor boot camp locations in Santa Fe, New Mexico with a combined total of 80 members paying $99 a month on 6 and 9 month auto debit agreements. I will have a 5:30am class and an 8:30 am class for stay at home moms. I will have two instructors teaching these boot camps for me the majority of the time.

By May 1st, 2010, I will have 20 personal training clients on training memberships paying $199 a month on 6 and 9 month auto debit agreements. I will have two other instructors training the majority of these clients.

I have my goals written out in more detail in my business plan. A business plan is crucial when it comes to maximizing you’re efficiency and not wasting time on guess work.

Bottom line is this… Write down you’re goals and be specific. Steve is the man!!

  15. Well I’m nowhere where I want to be yet or where I thought I’d be by now. Had a fair number of incidents occur in my life and been working through some issues since I started my boot camp. Tried to cover them up but they have impacted me a great deal going unresolved. But working through them now and currently this is where I’m at:

    - 1 boot camp location
    - 12 HB’s (not enough room to have 21 if want to fit monthly paying clients in)
    - 5 paying monthly clients at $197/month
    - Totalling $985/month (not even paying facility rent of $1100/month and now living with girlfriend’s family b/c can’t afford my own place)
    - Training part time with another company on the side just to get by.. Averaging $500/month there

Now where I want to be by the end of 2010:
    - 3 boot camp locations all run by other trainers
    - 2 making 100K (43 clients each at $197/month) and newest one making 75K (32 clients at $197/month)
    - 2nd location up and running within a month and a half
    - Be in Steve’s and/or Bedros’ coaching, mentorship program to really sky rocket my success

Why I want to be there:
    - Move out of gf’s place and be self sustaining
    - Start traveling the world again – next stops being Mexico, Thailand and the Galapagos
    - Have my debt paid off and be free of worrying about if my bills are going to be paid on time
    - Start saving to put a down payment on an apartment or condo
    - Be able to start a life with my gf without financial worries
    - To be confident in my ability to be able to stick with something and work hard at it consistently to make it succeed and to know that I can truly do what I set my mind to

  18. Hey Steve!
    Thnx for the great post!

    Currently, I have 35 clients at my semi-private training studio. Avg client = $300/month = $10500/month

2010 goal: $360k yearly from training dues. For that to happen I need 120 total clients if the avg metrix apply.

In th emonth of January I will sign up 35-60 clients (currently on track for 42). Each client will have an amazing experience, resign for a regular membership plan (auto-depit), and refer 2-3 friends. By February, my whole year will essentiall be set up to hit $360k.

I’ve put together the marketing plan and set the ball in motion. I’ve even encorporated meditation and my positive affirmation:
“I’m so happy and grateful, because I know with all that I am, I have everything I need and I will apply it all in order to make HardCore Fitness Studio into a $500k/year fitness business”.

$360 is my plan from membership dues and the rest is divided among other services.

Your words of wisdom and your interview with John Assaraf have played a big part in this. Thank you so much!
